Porters Neck Homes
At the far reaches of northern New Hanover County is where you will find the lovely community of Porters Neck. Englishman, John Porter, settled the area in the 1720s with the establishment of a family rice plantation. Porter chose the British term "neck" to name his property, since it denotes a narrow stretch of land that connects two other landmasses, thus-Porters Neck. That is certainly the lay of the land here, with the "neck" stretching from Hwy-17 north all the way to the Intracoastal Waterway. Porters Neck is also nestled between Pages Creek and Futch Creek, which means there are lots of homes with private docks and water access!
The rice plantation is long gone and these days the community's centerpiece is Porters Neck Plantation & Country Club. The private, gated development offers sweeping views of the Intracoastal Waterway, luxury homes, a golf course, and community boat ramp. There's also the 18-hole, Tom Fazio-designed golf course and practice facility, which has been recognized by Golf Digest as the #1 coastal golf course in North Carolina. After the Fazio course has been mastered, there are plenty other nearby courses to choose from including Eagles Point and Belvedere and Olde Point in nearby Hampstead.
Outside of the gated neighborhood, there are a few other stunning developments and gracious single-family homes. A few to consider are Porters Crossing, Blue Point and Vineyard Plantation. This community is definitely off the beaten track and perfect for those looking for an idyllic, natural escape thanks to its serene wooded areas, lakes, ponds and creeks.
Porters Neck is also an ideal choice for retirees who'd like to age in place and who may later face the prospect assisted living. Plantation Village is a premier retirement community located on 56 acres of the Porters Neck Plantation complex. Nearby are also Champions Assisted Living Residence and the Davis Health Care Center.
Many of the homes in this area reflect traditional architectural styles as well as charming low country cottages. A number of properties are situated on large wooded lots that provide lots of space for kids to play, pets to roam and gardening enthusiasts to have a field day! While it is a bit rural, Porters Neck is a quick drive to Market Street, aka Hwy-17.
Heading south will take you into town and by scores of great restaurants, fitness studios, home and garden centers, grocery stores and other goods and services. Wrightsville Beach and the popular Mayfaire Town Center are just minutes away as well! Northward, you'll reach historic Poplar Grove Plantation in about ten minutes and Topsail Island in under an hour. All in all, Porters Neck just about has it all!
