Forest Hills
Perhaps no other neighborhood in the Port City represents classic Southern charm quite like Forest Hills. Stately homes are set back on large, beautifully landscaped lots that are framed by live oaks, magnolias and graceful dogwoods. Development began in 1924 and over the following decades, Forest Hills became Wilmington’s premier destination for affluent home buyers. The attention to detail that went in to the planning of each block and individual home reflects the epitome of the long held belief: “They just don’t make them like they used to”. Perhaps that is why properties in Forest Hills continue to be in demand and hold their value!
Bordered by Wrightsville Avenue to the south, Market Street to the north, and Covil Avenue to the west, Forest Hills feels like an enclosed, private community. Its fairly central location put it minutes from downtown and the busy 17th Street corridor. Tree-lined streets and sidewalks make it ideal for walking and what a pretty stroll you’ll have thanks to meticulously manicured lawns and gardens. It is no surprise that homes here are frequently included on annual garden tours, including the highly coveted Azalea Festival Garden Tour!
Forest Hills is home to a variety of residents including singles, retirees and young families. Most of the homes are quite large and some include guest houses and finished garage apartments. The predominant architectural styles are Colonial, Georgian, Cape Cod and Greek Revival. There are also a few apartment complexes and townhome communities within Forest Hills although most properties are single-family homes.
