At the southern end of Pleasure Island, you’ll find the sleepy little seaside village of Kure Beach. Pronounced, “cure-ee”, the town is named after a Danish family who first purchased substantial acreage after multiple visits to the area, following the Civil War. Kure Beach was incorporated in 1947 and those who appreciate its pristine beauty and tranquil atmosphere have been flocking here ever since.
The Area
Along with miles of majestic beaches, Kure Beach boasts the oldest fishing pier on the eastern seaboard, an oceanfront park, nearby state aquarium and Ft. Fisher Confederate historic site and recreation area. The close-knit community is home to just over 2,000 residents. Thanks to its location at the very southern tip of Pleasure Island, the ever-changing natural backdrop is both beautiful and entertaining. Stands of Yaupon holly trees dot the landscape and lend an air of windswept mystery. Along with busy fleets of sailboats and fishing charters, vantage points along Kure Beach offer a ringside seat to stunning sunrises and sunsets, glimpses of soaring seabirds and migrating dolphins. Easy access to the unspoiled beach strand makes it easy to enjoy all the area has to offer, plus you’re minutes from the N.C. Aquarium at Ft. Fisher and ferry which heads to the charming town of Southport several times a day.
