Brookwood in Wilmington

In 2015, Wilmington’s charming Brookwood neighborhood officially received its designation on the National Register of Historic Places. This unique subdivision was developed in the 1920s with construction ending in the mid 1960s. As a result, Brookwood is full of prime architectural examples of Craftsman/bungalow, period cottage and Colonial Revival style homes. Unlike a few of its nearby streetcar neighborhoods, Brookwood was designed for residents with automobiles. That explains why most homes have tidy driveways leading to detached garages, which are situated towards the back end of each lot.

Brookwood is bound by Market Street to the north, to the south by Burnt Mill Creek and Wallace Park to the west. This makes it a next door neighbor to Forest Hills and Carolina Place! Most Brookwood homes have been painstakingly well maintained for years. In addition to its lovely homes, the landscaping here is tasteful and timeless. Many lots in Brookwood are 50 to 60 feet wide, 140 to 150 feet deep and extend to 200 feet deep for those lots along Market Street. Other lots that border Metts Avenue can sprawl to depths of 800 feet. Residents have maximized their ample green space, which explains why it is a frequent stop on local garden and walking tours. To call it quaint or full of character truly just skims the surface!

Although there are no built-in community amenities such as a swimming pool or racquet club, there are frequent special events and annual get-togethers. Sidewalks throughout its tree-lined streets make it ideal for a morning jog or evening stroll.

Each property in Brookwood boasts it own exclusive features, which is why it is impossible to make general statements about Brookwood real estate. Just keep in mind that they really “don’t build them like they used to.” A few listings have recently sold for prices in the mid $200s. However, depending on the improvements made and square footage, some Brookwood homes may go for much more. Seeing them in person is truly the only way to appreciate this one-of-a-kind oasis!
