Carolina Heights
As one of the Port City’s lesser-known historic districts, Carolina Heights is a true gem! It was developed just after the turn of the century as one of Wilmington’s original “streetcar suburbs”. Located just off of Market Street between 17th and 20th Streets, it is today experiencing a renaissance and has become one of the city’s most sought after neighborhoods, especially for young families, hip professionals, artsy types and Baby Boomers.
And no wonder-it’s location is uber convenient since it’s minutes from downtown and the campuses of New Hanover High School, Cape Fear Community College and New Hanover Regional Medical Center. In the past few years, numerous venues for dining, live music and entertainment have sprung up in the downtown area, so there’s plenty to do that’s just a short drive away. Carolina Heights is also not too far from lovely Greenfield Lake, which boasts parks, trails, paddle-boats, tennis courts, a skatepark and impressive amphitheater.

A drive through Carolina Heights reveals a lush canopy of green provided by stately oak trees. Tidy yards filled with bulb gardens and native shrubs are well maintained and beautifully landscaped, which is why it is a regular stop on the Azalea Festival Garden Tour. The homes in Carolina Heights are a nice mix of several architectural styles including 1920s bungalows, Georgian, Neo-Classical, Colonials and Victorian cottages. Since Carolina Heights is such an eclectic mix of properties, square footage and prices run the gamut. A few lucky house hunters could even stumble upon a nicely priced fixer upper. Recent listings have been from the low $200s all the way to $500+ (subject to change).
Each residence in Carolina Heights is filled with its own unique charm. Should you tour a listing in person, please keep in mind that the features of these fine homes are what many of today’s custom builders are trying to replicate. However, try finding hand-milled crown molding, leaded glass windows or hickory flooring in a new neighborhood!
